Slower after Alltrax SPM Install??
We installed a Alltrax SPM, Scotty B 600 amp contactor, and a Scotty B HD F&R switch in a 97 EZGO TXT today. Stock it would run almost 16 mph. Now after the install the max we get is 12 ish.
I went through the programming and played with the curves but is there a way to adjust the top speed? Or is this just it? It seems really silly to drop $650 in "performance" parts to actually lose speed. The batteries were fully charged and showing almost 43 volts on a full charge. Even in the monitor on the ALLTRAX software it showed the pack between 39-41 volts and delivering close to 400 amps to the motor. All connections are tight and happy as well. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Yes. Throttle goes to 100. Amps max out at 400.

Re: Slower after Alltrax SPM Install??
What controller did you replace (OEM?) and what size SPM did you put in?

Re: Slower after Alltrax SPM Install??
Going from a stock controller (Curtis 1206?) to a SPM48400 without making any other changes, should neither increased nor decreased the top speed.
However, there are two things that come to mind that might reduce the tops speed. 1. Throttle Speed Curve set to <100% at upper end. Attached is a Cut&Paste from the manual showing the speed being limited to 50% of max when Throttle is at 100% 2. Weak battery pack. Pack voltage drops when amps are drawn from it. The more amps drawn, the more it drops. The drop is almost instantly, but the voltage recovery as fewer and fewer amps are drawn is very slow. With a stock controller, your pack has never been hit with more than about a 275A draw and now it is being hit with 400A (or more), so the voltage is dropping about 45% lower. Since top speed is determined by the pack voltage at the time and pack voltage recovery is slow, you will not have as high of a pack voltage being applied to the motor unless you allow the pack voltage time to recover after rapidly accelerating from a standstill. Try slowly accelerating to about 8 MPH before flooring it and see if it will go faster. --------- Also, take a look at the log file. When the duty-cycle of the PWM output of the controller is at 100%, the battery volts will equal the motor volts and the Battery amps will equal the motor amps. If the battery pack has recovered from the high amps drawn from it while accelerating, the pack voltage will be about 0.2V less per 100A of current being drawn than it is when the batteries are at rest. (IE: About 12 hours after charging or about half an hour after current has been drawn from it.) ------------ Just out of curiosity, what is the tire height and which motor? Nearly 16 MPH is about 10% fast for a stock 97 txt series cart with stock height (18") tires and a standard speed motor. Last edited by JohnnieB; 07-04-2015 at 12:27 PM.. Re: Slower after Alltrax SPM Install??
This is my first series cart and I didn't realize that by just upgrading the controller I wouldn't be increasing the top end like on sepex carts. I guess a new motor will be ordered here in the next couple days. Tires are 12" Cobras. So maybe just slightly taller than stock.
Any motor recommendations. Trying to get to 21 mph. Thanks. |
