Ok part two...
I pulled everything off, and placed the shoes in, seated carefully into the top and bottom. I replaced the return spring and adjusted the brakes on the pedal mechanism, moving each nut towards the front of the cart. I replaced the clevis pins and placed cotter pins back in I purchased am adjustment tool, which made all the difference in moving the brakes, but... not enough. With the top adjustment all the way "in", I can juuuuust about fit the drum over the shoes. Its tight enough that without the rim attached it will move, but not freely. With the rim and tire back on and lug nuts tightened the resistance is so high that the wheel will only move with effort. I called to make sure I have the proper brake shoes, I do... So what am I missing...? Is there some adjustment that needs to be made on the lower pivot point seen in the second picture above...? Did I adjust the pedals the wrong way...? (I tried each direction without success) Are my drums the issue, do people turn golf cart drums...? Looking for advice on what to try next... Thanks |

I don't know if you can have the drums turned but I would check at the local brake shop. But what I have heard of is that people buy new drums as part of the brake job.

I had several drums turned at napa or oreilly. So check your auto parts stores near you. Its been years ago but they did it to remove grooves. I dont think thats your issue. Install brakes where they are fully seated without any tension place drum then adjust pedal linkage. Make sure the arm coming out if the back is not partially engaged and the slide adjustment at top is fully released.

I think the drums have some residual build up on the bolt hole side. thus the greater friction when the drum is pushed on by tightening the lug nuts... Ill call Napa tomorrow
I used an adjustment tool, for the top anchor point and have it set all the way inwards I'm not familiar with the proper operation of the bottom part, where the brake cable goes to. It seems like one side is frozen, no movement when the brake is actuated from the cable linkage. Is that a cylinder...? what would have to be replaced if it is not working correctly...? Thanks |

It sounds like the slides are seized. The slides are the mechanisms at the bottom of the backing plates that slide back and forth when you apply and release brake pressure. They need to be free enough to work their full range side to side by hand. Take shoes off and try working them side to side. If they're too tight, lube them up and work them back and forth with a hammer and see if they'll free up. If they don't, you may have to barely loosen the nut underneath the rubber boot behind the slide. It should be a 12mm nut. Loosen it just enough to allow the slides to operate freely. Re install shoes and re-adjust.
