Default 2012 RXV randomly stops controller or brake help

I have a 2012 RXV with a Danaher controller that randomly will slam on the brakes and come to a complete stop then wont move. if i put the key in R it beeps but wont go backwards. if i turn key off then on it works fine. the dealer plugged into controller and sad all it good. i bought a new motor brake and it still did same problem after driving for 30 minutes the new brake is dragging burning smell.

if i put cart in neutral and in tow mode the brake click but cart wont roll or it super hard to roll. but if i use the bypass plug connections under seat to disengage the brake it clicks and cart rolls freely?

do you think i need a replacement controller or is there something else i can look at or troubleshoot.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I think you overtightened the bolts on your brake. Unfortunately, it's probably already badly damaged. By the time you can smell it, damage is already done.

Original problem: obviously the fault is of the nature that a keyswitch reset clears it (meaning it's not a "persistent" fault). That fault would have to be caught by driving with the handheld scanner connected until the fault occurs, and investigate the warnings/errors portion of the handheld BEFORE the key is cycled again.

If I were to take a wild guess based on your description, I would bet the problem is encoder related (motor speed sensor).

Thanks.

The dealer installed motor brake. But it releases fine when I use the cable harness connecting 2 to 3 something like that. But the cart doesn’t release it when in neutral with tow run in tow. It click but still sticks.

That does not mean that the person that changed it bothered to look up the proper replacement procedure... The motor brake gets more voltage and current when you use the harness bypass procedure. Just because it unlocks when doing that, does not mean that it is OK. It gets 3/4 of the voltage and less than half of the current when operated by the controller. I suggest you loosen the attachment bolts and retighten to the point where the lockwashers are just flattened. Too tight and it crushes the aluminum housing, adding more tension to the brake than it can overcome with the power from the controller! The torque rating for those mounting bolts is in inch/pounds, not foot/pounds. Otherwise, be prepared to spend a few hundred $ for a new OEM motor brake.

We have a 2015 EZGO and it abruptly stopped yesterday. Fortunately we were not going fast, but it still threw my wife into the dash. It sounds similar to the original post. If we stop on a decent incline, the brake will lock and not release. The key must be turned to off and the put in reverse to back up. It then will allow us to continue. I'm not sure if the issues are related.
