It looks like an auto adjuster gone wild
The results were not good ...... that hoop you see in the pic was cut off of the brake drum's edge, by the shoe .....
Eventually the hub stripped out.....

I would suspect the auto adjuster was either never aligned properly, or more likely, this cart was jumped or dropped from a decent height to make that adjuster come off the slot. Either way, that's f'd up!

Man that is some brake carnage right there! Just wonder if something was not lodged in there to start with or if the brake shoes were never seated in the slots of the adjuster properly.Any way got another trot line weight to use.

I suspect the adjuster went way beyond it's duty and adjusted out as far as it is shown in the first picture. The shoe end of the adjuster was not turning so the star had to turn the rod out that far? Idunno Looks like the drum pulled the shoe off of the adjuster at some point and then the adjuster just kept on coming & pushed the bottom of the shoe up to the drum at an angle where it started cutting the Drum? I replaced everything, backing plate to cotter pin

I'm surprised there weren't more metal shavings present. Maybe with that much damage they all washed out during usage?
