Lou is on the money. Due to the design of the 2 stroke engine the cylinder gasket is prone to burn out. I would first remove the pipe and the muffler, inspect for damage and then replace using new gaskets.

I also have an 89 2 stroke and earlier this spring I replaced the muffler for $60!! I went to the muffler shop and the guy put a $20 tractor muffler on it and bent and welded a tailpipe onto it. It has a little different sound.....but $60!!! Beats what they want for a new one!!

What can I do about a really bad rattle in the muffler on my 84 2 stroke?

You can try pinning it down inside the muffler by whacking it with a hammer to dent in the sides so the rattle has no-where to go (kind of a Sanford and Son fix!!) or you can put on a tractor muffler for $60 also!! Be warned, by hitting it with a hammer, you may cause a hole in the muffler. Don't say I didn't warn ya!!

Well I think I might just try that! If i cut it open and empty it does it need the baffles or not?

I believe it will be louder without the baffles.
