Default Throttle Screw

I have a 1997 ezgo gas cart, what size is the throttle screw? It seems that the screw is to loose. I still have a little backfire problem...I took the carb off and the butterfly in the back seems to be closing all the way. Could I have an air leak somewhere. It still backfires when I slow down. Frustrated

Look where the flap on top of the carb moves when pedal is pressed...when you let all the way off the pedal the flap rest against a screw...take that screw all the way out and try it again...that is an idle screw...these carts dont idle so it is not needed and can cause backfire if its in to far...hope this helps

I took the screw out, still backfires.... The throttle linkage, is there a certain length it should be between ball sockets. When I removed the carb I had to readjust the pilot valve screw, turned it in all the way and backed it 2 turns. Is that correct....

Sounds correct on the pilot screw. For the Idle screw, my manual says to back it off till there is no contact with the butterfly then turn it in 1/8 of a turn. 1/8 or no contact would be fine (I'm sure). Be sure your throttle is closing all the way after you release the accellerator pedal. If not you may need a small spring for the throttle assembly.

Thanks, but how can you tell if the butterfly is fully closed with the carb on. Also what size is the throttle screw, mine seems like there's a lot of play in it, as if it was replaced with a different one. As far as the throttle linkage is there any set distance it should be set at.

unscrewing the idle screw (the one that attaches to the top of the carb butterfly) until the throttle comes to a compete stop. You can pull back on it with one hand while unscrewing with the other and you will know when it quits moving. If you have trouble just remove the screw for now and see if it gets any better/worse.

If you need to you could lock-tite the threads or something similar to reduce the slop. (I would say JB weld.....but be careful!!)

I would set the idle first then make sure there is no slop in the linkages and check for the butterfly to return to zero (without linkage slop) then see if it is going to full throttle.

No idea what size the screw is.

Hey thanks, do you know of anything else that might make it backfire!

Leaking exhaust gaskets (or any air in the exhaust through leaks and holes in piping and muffler) will also make a backfire. Incorrect Ignition Timing also will backfire. Incorrect fuel ratio will also backfire.

I would set the idle first, then make sure there is no slop in the linkages and check for the butterfly to return to zero (without linkage slop) then see if it is going to full throttle. If the throttle is not returning to zero would be my 1st thing to look at.

Let us know!!
