Smile HD Solenoid 586-120111, need diode or resistor?

Installing a new HD F/R switch and HD Solenoid 586-120111 to a NPX 4834 controller on a 2000 EZGO TXT

Do I need a diode and resistor?

How do I hook up (picture)with the four posts all located on top rather than two bigs on the sides and two small on the front?

The stock solenoid looks like it has a diode but no resistor. If I need one can I use the same one and switch to the new solenoid?

Resistor?

Thanks.

You need both the diode and the resistor.
The diode reduces arcing on the microswitch contacts in the solenoid activation loop.
The resistor reduces arcing on the solenoid contacts.

The old diode will work. Or replace it with a 1N4004.
The banded end attaches to the same terminal as wire from the pedal microswitch, which should have a Positive voltage on it when pedal is pushed.

The resistor should be 250 Ohm 10 Watt for a 363V system and 470 Ohm 10 Watt for a 48V system.

The diode goes between the two small terminals. (Solenoid coil)
The resistor goes between the tow big terminals. (Solenoid contacts)

Thanks JB,

I understand, can I get those at like a radio shack so I can pick it up?

Ran into another snag swapping out for the HD F/R switch. I don't know what it is called but the metal part that attaches to the F/R switch cam or pole with a square and round hole cut out to the manual arm. The square cut out does not fit onto the new F/R switch cam?

Any idea what this is called and where I can get one??

I think the part I need is called the linkage arm offset but I need one that will fit the heavy duty f/r shaft, so a little larger hole?

Ezgo used 2 different pivot shafts in the series carts. You can put your old pivot shaft in the new F&R. Pay attention to the tension on the pivot shaft nut. It must be tight enough to provide positive pressure on the rotary contacts.

I thought about changing out the shaft from the old one but didn't want to mess with anything and possibly screw it up. I messed with it some more and can get just part way on on one side of the linkage. Maybe it melted a little bit when it was getting so hot. I am going to try today to file down the insides a little and try to squeeze it on.

Thanks!

Just ran to radio shack...found the correct diode but they only had a 10 amp 100 ohm resistor. is it ok to try the cart out with that resistor on to see if I hooked everything up correctly while I order the correct size resistor?

Yes but understand that the resistor is in place to protect the controller from high inrushes in amperage. Minimize hard or quick starts

you should buy few more resistors and connect them in series to rich at least 500 om,then they would work like reducing arc resistor. But again, that depends on voltige of your batterys
