Steering shot
Just bought a used G16, been reading this forum for several weeks. Steering is real loose. I followed all the advice, pulled the plate, packed it full as I could using a putty knife, jacked up, set the pitman screw, etc. Play still seems to be from 11-2 while jacked up in the air. The idler arm moved in and out a good amount, is that the pitman arm that is bad? Most of the play is coming from the box, but there are some tiny movements elsewhere, but the most in the box.
Are there any tips for packing the box fuller with grease? I'm about to order a Jakes A-arm lift and wheels. Was thinking I might as well put new king pins in, possibly front wheel bearings. Hate to throw too much on the steering, but I want it to work correctly. Help is appreciated. |

Re: Steering shot
I'd have to look it up but I have rebuilt those boxes on trucks. Most of them shim the shaft in there so it can't move in/out, then you set the screw to take out the play but still move free for the full travel of turning. When they get worn the play will be in the center and not the ends of travel (no play turning but play going straight). Its because the most wear hours is going straight. At that point you have to replace something. But if it has similar play all through the steering travel it is likely some kind of adjustment or possibly something broken.
The G9 manual says adjust the play with the nut/bolt. If you can't get rid of it then inspect the internal parts. Says 1.2" max play turning the wheel. |

Re: Steering shot
Thanks for the info. All of the play is in the middle. I can get a Pitman arm for about $75, but just wasn't sure if that was the best use of my money on that or not.

Re: Steering shot
There is a nut twards the bottom of the hosing that the plate bolts to. There might be a cover over it, looks like a bigger nut. You have to tighten that till it bottoms the bearings then loosen it just a tad. then try tightening the set screw you already did a little more. Also check your toe on the tires, if there towed out your cart will drift, you want them slightly toed in but not much. then if these adjustments dont work and you checked for tightness on all the moving parts then the pitman arm.. its prob not the whole arm, there is two little (tits) not sure what you call them but they were out and supposedly you can not buy them without the arm. Yamaha tech told me this. G/L

Re: Steering shot
Don't think the pitman arm is bad, it's either the pitman shaft or more likely, the bushing at the bottom of the box, where the pitman shaft comes out. (If there is a bushing there, and not just aluminum).

Re: Steering shot
Might be able to inspect and figure out more. If the bearing/bushing/arm at the bottom of the arm is bad you can usually see it move sideways as you move the wheel the range of play it has. If the 'pins' that follow the worm gear or the worm is bad it will have more play in the center of the steering. Also check the steering wheel does it move in/out on the column. If the worm on the steering column shaft can move vertical that will make play too, though you might have to take it apart to see it. If that were true you could bang the wheel around in the play area and not see any movement of the arm, same if the fingers/worm were doing it. If the column/worm was moving vertical you should see the steering wheel move in/out on the column as you load it one side of the play to the other. I think its a solid shaft to the worm right?

Re: Steering shot
I don't believe there is any side to side play in the Pitman shaft down at the seal. I went ahead and picked a new one up online.

Re: Steering shot - fixed
Finally got my new Pitman arm installed today and that fixed it right up. I've attached some pics so others can see the difference.
Cheapest online ($60) was here. Steps to fix: 1. Remove nut on Pitman arm 2. Knock steering idler off 3. Remove steering box plate 4. Remove old arm, install new arm in same position (had to loosen steering box to clear frame) 5. Pack box full of grease 6. Reinstall top plate and follow instructions for setting pitman screw. |

Re: Steering shot
Nice work Jump! Thought I read somewhere that those pins were replaceable. Smallblock would know!

Re: Steering shot
I know this is an old post... But how did you manage to pull the steering idler arm off? Did you use a puller?
