Change Brake Shoes 91 club car DS
Hello,
I'm looking for some guidance on how to change the brake shoes on my 91 Club Car DS. Once I get the drum off I'm not sure how to proceed. I see and can take off the retaining pins on the shoes however the axle seems to be in the way off removing the shoes easily. I'm assuming I need to remove the axle to get at the shoes... This seems like an odd setup. Is there an easier way? If not, how do I go about removing the axle? Thanks in advance! |

You don't need to (or want to) remove the axle. It's a tight fit and a pain in the rear, but it can be done.
1. Take the cotter pin out of the brake arm on the backside of the assembly. 2. Remove the rubber boot on the top of the backside and loosen the stud all the way out. This is the "screw" used to adjust the brakes. 3. Remove the two retaining clips. 4. Remove the springs and shoes. (This is the part that requires some cussing) I found the easiest way was to pull the shoes forward and it releases some of the pressure on the springs. Once the springs are off, you can jiggle the shoes around (while cussing) and get them out from behind that plate you wish wasn't there. 5. It all goes back together in reverse order, but is even more frustrating and you think swearing has become your second language. The only way I could get mine back together was to hook one spring on before I worked the shoes back in, and hook the second spring once it was all back in place. Again. I pulled the shoes forward, hooked the spring, and then worked them back into place. You CAN do it. I did and had never touched a brake shoe or a club car before that. Good luck. |

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't sound like much fun now does it. I'll give it a whirl and will make sure my daughter is out of the garage before I practice my new language.

I bought one of those brake shoe spring removal things, but it was a waste. It just doesn't fit into those tight spaces. Pliers and a screwdriver are all you need. It's just frustrating more than difficult. I remember googling around and found some pictures that helped because I had NO idea what I was doing. They made it sound easier than it was, but the pictures helped me find the pins and clips they kept talking about. Good luck.

Good info Mark. I haven't had the need to do my brakes yet, but when I do this will be a good thread to look at.

Re: Change Brake Shoes 91 club car DS
When I got my '88, it had no brakes. I mean NONE. I thought it was kind of exciting, with the plan to work on them one day in the future. Then, my wife and her friend attempted a 3 point turn, and went backwards over a very steep hill. Luckily, a tree stopped them from rolling over. Time for brakes. That's what led me into this whole golf cart "cult". I had no idea until I went searching for brake shoes.

I know this is from "the forum that shall not be named", but this guy has some good pictures of the parts that need to be touched:

Pull the snap ring that holds the axle in. Take the axle out after you jack that side up. Much easier with the axle out of the way.
