Default Funny Ticking From Left Rear Hub Area.

Hi, Gang!

My EZ-GO TXT has developed a curious ticking sound in the left rear hub area. The ticking, or clicking, sounds a lot like a 3/8" ratchet wrench when it is ratcheting. The sound occurs about once per revolution of the wheel and has a duration, each time, of about a second when running at around five mph.

I suspect a bad wheel bearing, but, had the good sense to check in with the wisdom of this board before I jump to conclusions. Also, if a new bearing, or some other part, is needed, where would you suggest I go to purchase same.

Any ideas?

Jack up the cart, remove the wheel and bearing dust cap, remove the cotter pin thru the castle nut, and see if you can tighten that castle nut any farther than it is right now. If so, reinstall cotter pin, install bearing dust cap and wheel, test drive cart and see if it goes away. The brake drum splines may be on their last legs. They start clicking when they are about to fail.

Or, it could be a bearing.

Holy Moly, the castle nut was so tight I had to heat it with my MAPP torch and use a 1/2" socket wrench (not ratchet) and small sledge hammer to turn it. But, after turning a slight amount, I realized that the entire shaft was turning with it. The only way I was able to loosen and remove the nut was to get my wife to stand on the brake (the parking brake was on all along and couldn't hold it against rotation). Finally got it broken loose and off, along with the brake drum and all washers--right down to the bearing. By then, it was getting dark and I couldn't see well. Using a flashlight, I saw, and felt, something that looked wrong where the outside diameter of the bearing rides in the "carrier" (brake plate???). I'll take a pic tomorrow and attach it to a followup post.

Will I need to remove the brake back plate (the stationary plate that is bolted to the differential housing)? I think the bearing should be free to slide out, but, this one seems "frozen" in place with the stuff I described briefly above--I fear that some of these parts might be really messed up. I'll see if I can find schematics of the TXT rear end. Thanx, guys.

Many thanx for the links, Crash, they were just the ticket for how the hub and axle are configured. I completed the job today without incident. The sealed bearing is a rather common one that I found at the local NAPA parts store (for those who might be interested, it is a Timken 6004XX and cost me under ten bucks).
