Which rear end
Hello everyone. I recently picked up a "behind the barn" find this past June that my son's and I somewhat restored. I believe it is a 77' EZGO, 36V, resistor, X-444. The serial number is barely readable but we got her running and she has been fun with new batteries and lights and the some rattle can paint for her. It always had a moan in the rear end/axle and I check the fluid and it was full and wasn't too funky. I figured a bearing or something might be going. Yesterday, when my son drove it down the block and parked it at the clubhouse, it groaned and moaned and wouldn't move whenj he went to leave. Well, it slightly moved but it sounds like the pinion and or ring gear might be shot. I opened up the large allen plug on the top on the input to the differential and can see the shaft spinning and it is oiled. Sorry for no pics other than the X struts for the roof. I was told that is how you identify the 444's. My question is what Dana rear end did they put in EZ Go's in the late 70's early 80"s. The motor bolts right to the differential, not sideways. I will try and crack open the back tonight to validate my diagnosis but I was also trying to price both the differential and or the ring and pinion but they all list it by Dana number like 60, 44 or 70. Which Dana did EZ Go use in the late 70's? Thanks for any insight.

Re: Which rear end
Yes, That's the one. Only mine has the wheel studs pressed in the brake drum. I have the same pic from an 84'-86 444 manual. Any idea what differential these are?

Re: Which rear end
I sent you a PM with my contact info. I'm at the southwestern corner of NC. I'm planning a trip to Charlotte in the next week or two, can drop the cart off at a buddies shop in Biscoe NC. A few weeks after that, we'll be heading to Wilmington. The cart frame is badly rusted but the rear axle was in good condition back when I used to drive it, before some druggies stole the batteries out of it. Here's what it looked like before the motor removal.

Re: Which rear end
Pulled the cover and drained the fluid. Differential is good as is the ring and pinion. Looks like a broken left axle. I can spin the right wheel and the gears move. Turn the left wheel and nothing. Are these axles keyed? Ran out of daylight to start pulling the wheel and axle. Breathing easier now that I know the rear end is solid. Thanks Bob
