Smile Yamaha G1 1982 Engine swap/Lift kit

ENGINE SWAP:
Has any one done a engine swap on their G1 golf cart?
If so what size engine did you swap with?
Was it worth it?
Do you miss having reverse?

Lift Kit:
Also have you installed a lift kit?
What kind did you find to be the best?
Is Jakes lift's any good?
6inch lift can fit a 22 inch tire right?

Thanks to whomever can help with these questions

Hey Farms!

There are a few swapped G1's and I am in the process of "big block" swapping my 1979 G1 right now! Check out my build thread below!

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/clone...-g1-build.html

I've learned a ton about the swap process and can offer a little info - The most common motor used is the Honda GX390 or a Chinese clone of that motor like the predator 420 but can go all the way up to 440 or 460 cc's on that same block.

I personally don't care about losing reverse and see mine like a go kart, but a G2 transaxle can be swapped if it is important to you. One thing to note is the way it is geared (13:1 15:1) or something like that you may not gain much top end speed. You speed will also be restricted because of the governor on the motor usually set at 3,600-3,800 rpm. One thing EVERYONE says is the torque difference is INSANE!

You can of course un-govern the motor but will need to beef up the valve train for the motor to last. I plan on running mine governed until after the break in period and then cracking it open and doing some internal mods and intake/exhaust.

If money is no object to you, I and am sure others here would HIGHLY recommend http://www.vegascarts.com They build awesome golf cart "clone" engines, and install kits + performance parts! Aaron is a solid dude and always helpful! They do not have a bolt in kit for the G1, but with enough time and determination anything is possible!

Here are a couple videos of G1 swaps and an older G1 clone build thread here!

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/clone...ld-thread.html <- Totally modifying my engine mount like this dude! Keeping it level is a best practice as these engines are splash oiled!

Can't speak on the lifts, as I am not planning on lifting mine anytime soon but i've read great things about Jakes!

Welcome to BGW - Keep us posted and share some pics!

my favorite swap that i want to do SOOOOOOO badly.

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...lockin-g1.html

i think jakes lift is the only lift available these days for the g1 but i could be wrong. and i think you can fit 23 inch tires. Slightly bigger with the correct spaced wheels and some clearancing of the the frame in the wheel wells.

also with a lift youll need to notch the frame for the clutch. how much depends on if you have the old or new style clutch. new clutch is bigger. either way bracing is needed.

If you are a fabricator, here are some easy plans I found, here in BGW, to build a 4 inch lift for G1s.

Looks like you're new here on the forum. Since you are exploring modifying your cart you will enjoy browsing the modified carts section. There are engine swap sub forums and one for lifted carts too. Take some time to read thru them. You will find a lot of experience and opinions based on what various members want from their modified carts.

And all of us are always anxious to chime in.

Enjoy!
