Default 1982 g1

Ok I have read until my eyes have fallen out of my head. Here is what I’ve done. I have replaced ignition coil, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug, and belts. I dug in and replaced both crank seals and cleaned both sides up. Not knowing the carbs were different I bought another.

Now I’m at the piston. I read I could get a j10 oversized piston and rings and bore out my cylinder. I got a .25mm o/s. I’m just wanting to make it golf course worthy right now. My question is, are there things I’m missing or am I on the right track? Also is there anyway to make a j10 cylinder work? I don’t have the original carb as it just wasn’t there when I received the cart. Guys thank you for your time on this.

You have done all the main things to do ....Question?...Do you need to replace the piston?
Have you done a compression test?...Maybe all it needs are new rings!...Does it have a noisy top end?....Take the spark plug out turn the motor over until the piston is at the top,put a screw driver in the plug hole and check if the piston moves and makes a rattle at all.The guys here say 82 G1's don't need high compression ....around 90 is fine.Remove the carby and give it good clean wouldn't hurt either, take the jets out and blow out.

Ok I’ll check the piston. It doesn’t have any marks it’s pretty smooth. I’ve got rings I’ll throw them on and check it. Thanks for the help.

check compression first! you could save yourself time and gaskets aka money. 90 plus psi on the j17. other years your looking at 120.

I think all g1's use the same piston. The 82 has a different jug (smaller ports), head( big combustion chamber ), exhaust, smaller reed assembly and the engine cradle is different.

other year jug and heads will bolt up. other year exhaust systems would require to be bent or the engine cradle changed out.

I'm currently running a j17 engine with j10 carb, exhaust and cradle. Runs pretty good really.

So would I not have to use an oversized piston then? If compression test fails that is.

don't worry about the oversized piston until you check compression.

if that comes in low then take your new .25mm over piston and your stock jug/cylinder to a machine shop to bore the cylinder. remember with over size pistons you need oversize rings.

Like Mike says...Do that compression test & have the throttle wide open when you do it....From my expense with two stroke stuff..mowers and chain saws is that a set of rings is all that is required, they bring the compression right back up again, don't waste money if you don't have to as rings are cheap..If that fails then go for the oversize.
Let us know.

Hey I got it pulled and the piston had a 75 stamped on it. Compression was low when I checked it. I started a new thread with a pic of the piston.
