Default G2 Engine Removal Question

I am in the process of removing my engine to do a good de-greasing, address any oil leaks, permanently fix the oil fill tube and re-thread my oil drain plug.

I just about have everything disconnected and out of the way but was curious what this adjustment/device was near the starter/generator and air box.

It looks like a tensioner of sorts with a red tension cable.

I forget what they call that, but what it does is keep the engine from moving under acceleration. The engine is mounted with rubber mounts, so there is some flex. Under acceleration the engine tends to move a bit, which can change the tension on the drive belt, causing a loss of performance. That cable prevents the engine from moving.

Thank you sir! I just got off the phone with Mr. Don Plowman up in Michigan. It is the side to side alignment something or other. Either way mine is worn out so he is sending me a new one along with some other goodies :)

Getting a new drive clutch and rear clutch. New motor mounts, plowman exhaust, carburetor jets as well! Should be a night and day difference when I get this thing back on the road!

Right now it is in pieces, everything out of the way just waiting for new parts. Going to repair the oil drain plug and oil fill neck. Replace the vacuum lines and give it a good cleaning to get the oil that has leaked from the fill neck and leaky vacuum/oil lines off of it. Hopefully Plowman's parts don't take too long to arrive, he said he was shipping as soon as I got off the phone with him yesterday!

Edited to add pictures of current state.

As much oil all over that engine, I would recommend taking off the side case and replacing the case gasket. G2/G9 engines did like to blow the gasket between the 2 upper bolts were the dip stick is. Make shure to get a true Yamaha OEM gasket, they now have sealant on critical area's of the gasket. Good luck with your G2

small block, I am going to be replacing my clutch anyways so I was thinking about doing the side case seal, what else is involved with that task other than opening the case, do I need to change the seal on the output shaft as well?

Might as well. You only want to do the job once.
