Default 88 2pg exhaust

I acquired an 88 with the 2pg. Needs a lot of love and while waiting for parts I decided to cut the muffler open. Sounded like a box of rocks if you shack it. All the baffles are rotten or broken off. I could patch it back together mostly. My question I guess is if I leave them out 1 how much will it affect it running wise and how loud is loud without them? 2 how crappy are the cheapo made in China ones? Thanks. Never messed with 2 stroke stuff.

During the rebuild of my 85 2pg a couple years ago I noticed the muffler sounded the same as yours, at that time new ones were unavailable so I had to put it back in. It's been running great ever since so I believe the overall design of it is where you get the much needed back pressure, the baffles are just for the noise.

I golf a lot with a friend who has an 88 2pg and it's really not any louder than hers, if anything it may have a very slight different tone but nothing like the annoying 2 cycle dirt bike crackle lol.

I see new ones are now available for only $100, I would have done that back when I rebuilt the engine but now I'll wait til it blows out completely.

I think I’m just gonna stuff it with a bunch of steel wool. Give it some of the back pressure back and maybe keep the noise down. I’m not really worried about it being load. I really just want to do donuts in the snow and then I think it’s for sale in the spring. Either way it will be a lot nicer than when I got it.
