Default 1996 Carryall FE290

hey guys. I'm having a problem getting my cart to start. after it warms up it does fine the rest of the day. I cleaned the plug yesterday and it was really black with soot and carbon. I jumped on it to go up to mamas house and it took like 15 seconds before it would fire. it would just turnover and even tried choking it. the plug is an ngk bpr5es. I burn only ethanol free gas in too. does something need adjusting or maybe run a hotter plug? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks y'all
mike

I’d start by taking off the carb and giving it a good cleaning. Probably all it needs. A valve adjustment probably wouldn’t hurt either, especially if it’s been a while since it was done last. I’d recommend a valve adjustment every year, two at the most depending how much you use it.

thanks for th reply, I will pull it and give it a cleaning and see how that does. the motor was recently rebuilt and has approx 40 -50 hrs on it. I don't know if the valves would need adjusting right now. and it does get used everyday. they might could use a little adjustment. ill clean the carb and see how that does. might even stick a new plug in it. thanks again. mike

I have the same cart. mine acts the same way especially when its "cold" or has sat for awhile. If the motor is warm it fires right up. Doesn't matter what the outside or air temperature is - but it will start a little quicker if its warm outside but not much quicker. Someone suggested valves to me - but I cleaned the carb a few times and it acted the same. I also run ethanol free gas

it will do just as yours does. the starter takes a bit to start turning , take forever to fire, then eventually the motor will run. choke usually helps once its firing though. I drive it once a week so I forget about it until I take my weekly trip
