Yeah, I agree, it looks pretty stupid but hard to free hand with the tip of a fat finger on a touch pad mouse. I thought it kinda looked like a Marathon. I would agree on crash on the safety aspect but I think a stout x brace would be ok.

There's plenty of frame under there to tie into and then mod the plastic cover to reinstall.

This would be my suggestion also. You could put a couple of gusset's under the bottom without loosing any clearance and it wouldn't bend down.
