IQ Motor Removal

I am removing a GE IQ motor for the purposes of putting a PQ in. Power was cut to the motor according to protocols all listed in the forums (run-tow in "tow", negative cable off the pack, positive cable off the pack, etc.)

The motor unbolted and loosened easy enough. However, the motor housing is the only thing that seems to be coming off easily. The armature/coil assemby isn't easily coming off, not that I have tried very hard. Now, I don't want to do anything crazy to try to get it off without asking here first.

Any easy way to get this thing off?

Disregard. Put a little pressure (and I do mean a little) on the back of the armature with a pry bar and it slid right off.

I hope after your experience getting Your IQ motor free that you repaced the Drive Unit Bumper Part # 102235201 and Moly Teflon Lub Part # 102243403 so if the time comes to remove motor again there wont be any sticking problems like you had?

If the motor is still in one piece... or can be... use a rubber mallet and pound on the back side of the motor, (towards the differential housing.) That can help break the bond between the spline and armature.

I did all the research on this forum and others. Made the leap and decided to send my stock motor to PQ for a Bandit.

The end of the story is the Bandit upgrade is great with an increase in speed and more torque. I also upgraded my cables to 4ga and did Robbie's trick with the OBC pass-through by using a 3in length of threaded 5/16 ss.

Now, what you guys didn't tell me is what happens when you finally break the stock motor loose. After wrestling with the motor for 30 minutes and hitting it with a rubber mallet, I'm directly under it when it finally separates from the drive box. The cloud of black death begins to fall from the opening all over my face. I turn my head to keep it out of my eyes and mouth (unsuccessfully) and it begins to fill my ear.

Now a steady stream of obscenities is spewing from my blackened mouth and teeth as I bash my head on the axel trying to get out from under the falling cloud of black death.

After realizing that I'm not in any real danger, my wife nearly wets herself laughing at the sight of me spitting and clawing trying to get the carbon dust out of my eyes, mouth, teeth and ear. It took 3 days.

You guys could have told me.
