48v Ez Go Battery Problems

I have a 96 Ez Go converted to 48v with 650 amp alltrex controller and D&D torque motor. I am at our hunting lease in Georgia and brought the buggy for the first time, on the way out yesterday it had no problem climbing the hills and keeping speed. On the way back in it barely made it up the hills and acted like it was almost dead. It is 5 miles one way to the back of our property, 6 of the batteries are from 2006 I believe, and the other 2 are refurb that I bought. Does this sound like an old battery issue? I also read on here that if you run the buggy down to almost dead, it could smoke the controller. Is this true?

The Alltrax has a low voltage cut off designed to protect the controller from excessive heat caused by running at very low voltage. This lower limit is set by whoever programmed the controller.
Just judging by the age of the batteries and the motor/controller demands, I would bet your batteries are not holding up to the task. Take your voltmeter with you and check?
If you charge the cart up and it takes off fine again you can bet the batteries just don't have the storage capacity they should.

Sorry about your bad luck...This is the Club Car board, though. Your cart has all the symptoms of bad batteries, and the age of them is a factor as well.

I can't answer your question about "low batteries smoking your controller", but I'm sure someone here, or on the EZGO board can!
