![]() Tearing down my 18hp big block and came across the stator and it’s only a 1wire setup and only half rounded stator and has a option to use a full rounded stator since it has 4 screw holes, so would it work if I bought a full rounded stator and purchase a rectifier to mount on side of my engine for charging ? Or just stick with the one Red wire ? Just don’t know how to charge a battery with the one red wire. Sorry for so many questions first build so many questions :)

![]() When you get your service manual it will show you all that. Your engine should have a rectifier that converts the AC volts to DC. The stator will produce AC volts.
Can you post a pic? |

![]() Something like this?
The flywheels are not interchangeable, and it is the magnets on the "flywheel" that determines the output of the alternator. The stator in not interchangeable. I do think there are a few members, that have switched to a regulated 16 amp setup. I not sure the regulated 20 amp set up will work with 18hp Vanny.... But i am pretty sure you have to buy the flywheel and stator as one unit to make it work.... I thought the 18hp Vannys had the16 amp regulated I guess I'm wrong?? |

![]() Yes like that, The one I have now is half rounded and didn’t have a rectifier unless they removed it. I’ll post some pics here in a few

![]() The flywheel is magnetized all the way around if that’s normal or not

![]() The rectifier/voltage regulator is mounted above the starter, has yellow and red wires and plastic plug/clips.
I'm thinking someone monkeyed with that engine. Unless that stator is a single phase? I've never seen one with only one side. All the one's I've worked on had both. |

![]() Well I don’t think it was ever touched inside the motor, they might have took the rectifier off but I’m just curious about the half of the stator unless like u said it’s single phase

![]() Yep that's a DC only alternator, no rectifier with that. Those types of engines are usually used in a piece of equipment that doesn't need to power anything except the battery for electric start, say generator or pressure washer. Usually lawn and garden tractors/mowers will have the AC alternator with more power that goes into a rectifier/regulator.
Did you get that from your manual? |
