Which oil to use?
What is a good/best oil and weight to use in my cart? I believe it to be a 1 quart capacity. Is that right. No off road riding just streets and cart paths.

Re: Which oil to use?
Most race teams that aren't sponsored by an oil company, use Valvoline. Been that way for 40 yrs.

Use 10w40 in a mild climate. Use 20w50 in colder climates. I use Yamalube because, well, I am a Yamaha Dealer. Synthetic is good but it has a tendency to shrink seals and o-ring rubber. If you use it keep your eyes open for oil leaks.

Re: Which oil to use?
You recommend a heavier oil in colder climates? Could you please explain why?

Re: Which oil to use?
Got to be a mis print. 20/50 is to heavy even in warm climates. It makes a air cooled engine run even hotter. Also all the engine manufactures Briggs,Kawasaki and Honda all recommend synthetic oil for a air cooled engine. As it will take more heat before it degrades.

Re: Which oil to use?
I agree with you on the oil weight, BigBlockMan. Synthetic oil is far superior to standard petroleum oil, but Chompy is right about the potential for oil burning and/or leakage especially on older engines. If he has a rational reason for using heavy oil like that, I would like to hear about it. I am always willing to learn something new.

Re: Which oil to use?
We have noticed on the ezgos that the older EH engines burn more oil when they are switched over to multi-grade stuff. Original oil was 30wt. and that is what i continue to put in them. Synthetic in my BB engine & Differential, of course.

Re: Which oil to use?
The thing on shrinking seals and rubber WAS fact many years back. Just like synthetic should not be mixed with regular oiils. The last rumor was if a motor was run on regular oil for many years do not switch it over to synthetic.
TODAYS synthetic oils can be mixed with any standard oil and also has had additives to prevent seal shrinkage for many years. Alot of modern synthetics are actully a blend of both synthetic and natural oils to get the best properties of both. Here's my theroy, A small engine only holds 1-1 1/2 qts of oil. Put the best quality oil in it you can and change it at least yearly. These oil discussion have been going on for years, There is no "right" answer. Kind of like asking a ford guy if he thinks a chevy is better. Use the oil you feel comfortable with. If you have a problem like Scotty mentioned a straight grade may not smoke or burn as easily as a multi grade. If you live in Alaska and the outside temp is 40 below zero, Straight 30 weight may not be your best choice. |
