Default Voltage Reducer Wiring

Installing one of these http://www.diygolfcart.com/Golf-Cart.../volt-2000.htm on a 2012.5 Drive and unfortunately they do not include instructions for Yamaha. A note in the item description says to run the yellow wire with the red wire. I tied it into the red wire to the battery, and got a pretty good spark when I touched the terminal. Checked the reducer fuse and light kit fuse and they are fine. Not sure if I fried something or not.

Anyone have experience wiring this reducer?

I have no experience with that unit, but it sounds like the yellow wire is the trigger wire that turns the unit on. When you made that connection to the battery you were completing a circuit in open air. A spark was produced, but it was what I call a "thin" spark. Might have flown a few inches too, but nothing is harmed, unless there is an abundance of hydrogen floating around from a charging cycle. When you do something wrong on the pack wiring you will produce a "thick" spark. These are bright as hell, produce a smoke pillar, and eat metal. You cannot confuse the two events, LOL.

I have one of these in the mail. Where do you connect things to the ignition switch? Is there a wire you tap somewhere under seat or do you actually run up to ignition?

hey,

have used that particular model reducer a few times. dont quite remember the colors, but they should be labeled on the reducer itself on a sticker or something. you will have an input negative and positive. these go to the MAIN negative and positive of your battery pack. you will have a negative and positive output wire. the negative output wire will tie into all the negative wires from your headlights and tail lights. the output positive wire will be run to a toggle switch to turn the lights on and off, on one side of the toggle switch. on the other side of the toggle switch, you will run a wire and tie it into all the positive wires combined from your headlight and tail lights. the last wire will be orange or something and that ties into your key switch wiring so you can turn the reducer on and off when you dont use the car so you don't drain power. to locate which wire you need to tie into on the key switch, shave a little insulation away at both wires and put the positive probe on one wire and keep your negative probe on the main negative battery. when key is off voltage should be zero, when key is on you should see pack voltage. if not, then you know its the other wire lol
