1996 club Car FE290 compression?
Should for any reason a FE290 have 170psi? Well let me rephrase that, a well used stock engine? I picked up a 1996 DS that was stated to have a bad smoking problem. The kart was not in running condition when i purchased but soon after getting it home and cleaned up i fired it up without much problem. I did a compression test and the results were just over 170psi on each test. The plug may have been slightly oily but not really that bad. I guess my compression tester may be a little off but still i would not think this engine would have such compression for its age. The smoking issue is something I am about to work on resolving. It smokes but not ultra bad but then again I only ran it a few minutes at most.

Welcome to BGW Mike!
165psi is nominal for a fresh, to good running engine, so....your not that far off! |

170 isn't unheard of. Keep an eye on your oil level (overfilling will cause it to smoke) and oil condition. Run it a bit longer and see what you've got. Good luck.

Re: 1996 club Car FE290 compression?
The oil was not even on the stick when I got it home so I had to add about 1.5 quarts of oil to get it to an acceptable level on the stick. I wouldn't think it would even hold much more than that so maybe the oil had been drained. Whatever the case I think it was a decent purchase which I plan to sell to try to fund my Carryall 2 that I have been putting to work around my place for about a month.
Here is the 1996 DS which has a factory z lift and I guess re-arched rear springs as the axles are still on top of the springs. Here is my Ugly carryall that someday I will add a small lift and some offroad tires so I will not keep getting it stuck. |

1.5 quart is 4 ounces more than total capacity.
