Sounds like they need a refresher course. False positives are a thing. I had 90 employees in my last job, and training them was top of the list of priorities. Had two contractors fail to charge their detectors over the weekend, and chose to enter a 5 mile long 72" steel pipe to weld. Failed to carry detectors, failed to turn on ventilation, lit a cigarette and both died within days, in a medically induced coma. Lost one employee in a confined space. No gasses, but oxygen deficient atmosphere.

The space in the basement which opens to the garage door is just deep enough to fit a golf cart. We live in a golf community and just moved in. I do have a lawnmower and weed wacker down there but neither have been ran. We just moved in last week.

The cart is brand new and has 1.7 miles on the clock. We just got it on Friday of last week and the batteries are all full. The CO meters were going crazy all over the house and we pulled the golf cart outside and lifted the seat and the meters spiked up. There were four fireman with three different styles of meters and all were getting CO readings from the cart.

Additionally, because the cart is stored and plugged in at the basement my entire house smelled terrible.

Three of the batteries had a film on the top where it looks like the water inside had boiled out and dried on top of the batteries which is probably where the smell came from. They sent a trailer over to my house today and picked the cart up and are going to test it.

I wanted electric to keep the noise down because we will be using it to get around the neighborhood at night time plus I don’t want to have to keep gas cans at the house all the time.

So the cart is IN the basement. Yes, it is perfectly normal for new batteries to do exactly what you describe. Like others I don't know where the CO came from.

Will that stale odor go away? How long before it stops?

Happens in my garage all the time. A couple hours after charging maybe. I would not describe it as "stale." Sounds like you may have a mold/mildew problem in that basement. "Laundry that got left in the washer for a few days..." That is a moldy, mildew smell. What part of the country are you in?

Did you have a home inspection before you bought?

Yeah. Brand new construction home. As soon as I unplugged the cart and aired out the basement the stank went away.

We also have a professionally installed whole home dehumidifier that keeps moisture at 50% in the basement. It has a outlet hose that runs out to a flower bed. It’s definitely not mold.

My description of the smell is probably bad, but the dealer came and got the cart today and it had been unplugged since the fire department was out here yesterday. Since it’s been unplugged that smell is gone but it was not a good smell lol

Does the smell ever go away completely?

Do your batteries have a film on the top of them from the water boiling over when charging? It wasn’t wet with standing water but definitely could see there was some liquid on top of the batteries.

Not being argumentative but trying to help. You obviously had the "smell" at 10:45 tonight. Less than a half hour ago. Whatever lingering smell you have has nothing to do with that golf cart.

No worries. I didn’t think you were being argumentative. I can say for sure the smell is gone once the cart was unplugged and the basement aired out.

It’s my own fault for not doing just a little bit more research. The dealer told me today when I spoke to them that the smell is normal. I can fit the cart in my garage if needed, it’s just a lot more convenient having the cart in the basement :)
