Default 2001 EZGO burning oil

I have a 2001 ezgo gas cart and it seems to be burning oil. The seat area gets hot and you can smell fumes if driving too long. I seem to be adding oil more than I should be. I do not see any dripping on the ground though. Any ideas what to check first would be greatly appreciated.

It has a Robin EH29C engine it it.

It does seem that a rebuild is coming soon. Have you checked the compression ?

I have checked the compression and it is 120 in both cylinders. I seem to get oil on top of the value cover cap. If I drive it at a slower pace, the seat seems to get warm, but if I drive it faster, not as bad, which could be due to air flow due to speed. I do not seem to be losing oil anywhere. The plugs seems to have a little oil on the tips of them though.

If the compression is 120 and you are 100% sure you held the throttle wide open when testing and your gauge is correct then I think its time for a rebuild.

Rechecked compression and it was around 60. I then did a wet test and it was around 100. I also adjusted the valves.

It’s still time for a rebuild as trig said. If you drive it, I wouldn’t go very far. These carts are no fun to push back home.

So I double checked the compression again this weekend. Both cylinders read 80 psi. I added a little oil to the spark plug and it read about the same. So is it definately an engine rebuild or is there anything else I can check. It still runs good, but the exhaust smell is the old real issue.

Can you take a picture of the valve adjusters?

80psi is way low. If oil didn’t bring it up then it’s likely the intake valves are sunk into the head and need to be replaced. A picture of the valve adjusters can usually confirm.

That said, intake valves will cause crappy compression. But not make it burn oil or smoke. Chances are you still are due for a full tear down and rebuild.
