Re: Suspected broken timing belt, advice, info, thanks
As I think about how to configure things I think I would prefer the S/G system but I don't care for the pedal start at all. Maybe I'm wrong but I would rather have an automotive style starter switch since that's what we're used to. No drag racing/land speed record attempts are planned. Just want a reliable cart for use around the property. I had a local auto electric shop test the S/G and the tech said the generator was putting out 40amps unregulated. I had him get me a solid state regulator to use instead of the antique original and that's been dialed in. So that leaves the clutch, one that will let the engine idle, and a carb that would be suitable for that mode of operation. Any recommendations for those. As for engines, I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Predator 420. I can get one locally and they seem to be reliable according to some local guys that have them on various devices.

With my VC 460 yamaha I use a key switch start with the S/G. So it drives basically like a car for cruising around the island.

That's the picture I have in my mind. For myself it's not a big deal but some of the family would be better off with automobile type controls.

Curiosity got the best of me. I had to pull the cam cover and see what I could see. The belt was broken, cam turns ok I think but I don't know how loose it should feel but I turned it easily by hand even without loosening the rocker tappets. I have the conversion parts from VC to swap in the 420 so hopefully I'll get started soon. There's a guy interested in the 295 to have rebuilt so maybe I can get a dollar or 2 from it
