Default G1 No Spark

Ok, I managed to get it running yesterday enough to take a few laps
around the block.
It ran great the first one or two laps.
It got hot enough make my legs warm on the seat.
I assume I will have to pull the cowling and clean out all of the mud from the dirt dobbers.
After letting it set for a couple of hours with a strong fan blowing over the
engine, I took the wife for a ride.
It ran great again for about 100 feet, then started missing.
Not excessively, but randomy.
Varying the throttle made some difference, but not much.
I naturally assumed a broken, shorted wire and started checking every one of them with an ohm meter to insure continuity.
I only found 1 wire with major chaffing and repaired it, but still no spark.

After reading every post on this site under "G1 no spark", I took the 4 wires from under the engine to the magneto and ohmed them out.
Black has continuity to engine block.
Black to brown has an open.
White/green to white/red has 15 ohms.

I figure the magneto got too hot and fell apart. Am I on the right course here?

Black to Brown is the magneto charging/source coil and should read about 350 ohns. If you have a digital ohm meter, make sure its set on a scale larger the 350 otherwise it will read open.

While your measuring, jiggle the harness and move the crankshaft back and forth by turning the primary sheave. I had a broken black wire that only showed up when the engine was cranked in reverse.

The black wire is ground. Brown to black is your charge coil and should be about 370 ohms. Your charge coil or the wires to it have failed.

I've puilled the magneto assembly and ohmed the larger of the two coils.
It shows 1 when I set the meter to 2K and I place the leads on the brown
wire and the frame of the coil. I even pierced the brown wire as close to
the coil as possible and the othe lead at the connector end, no ohms.
I guess this is why I have ne spark.
The other small coil ohms out to 15 ohms so it is good.
Which of these two coils control spark?

The small coil is the pulser coil which sends a signal to the Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) module telling it when to fire a spark.

The big coil is the source/charging coil which provides the power to the CDI and eventually to the spark coil itself.

Sounds like you might have a bad source/charging coil, dude.

So I tried to fix this coil by myself today in order to save some time and money. New coils are retail for $98.
I ripped apart an old DC power supply and removed the transformer. The wire was .005 and about 400 ft long.
I opened up the source coil and found all of the enamel had been melted off the wire.
In the course of counting the number of turns as I unwound it, I ran into several breaks in the wire.
I got pissed and just cut the wire off without counting anymore.
So I started winding the coil and about 2 hours later, I was done. Everything checked out except the resistance.
I got 35 ohms. I don't have anymore wire so I'm not looking to redo this. Found a coil here for $66

Thanks for your help guys. Hopefully the cart will be up and running again soon.

After waiting a few days for my coil to arrive, I finally put everything back together.
Just FYI, the brand new OEM coil measured 370 ohms out of the package.
In order to facilitate easy reinstallment, I marked the magneto backing plate and bellhousing so I could get the timing back.
It fired right up but would not idle with the cdi bk/w wire disconnected.
I ended up pulling the carb to find a load of trash in the bowl.
This was a brand new carb put on just a couple of weeks ago along with a new filter and hoses. Turns out, the hard line running around the back of the engine had trash in it.
So I moved the filter over to just before the pump ofter cleaning out the pump again.
She idles so quietly and at such a low rpm.
I hope everything keeps working for awhile so I can get it lifted and some new shoes on it.
