see if you can get a loaner tool from your local parts store that looks like this. makes it very easy.
btw, big block man was having a sale recently on the ausco kits.

They went on, they'll come off. Eventually!

Although one time I had to break one apart with a chisel and a BFH because the splines were rusted tight.
