Default Differential problem

I was taking off my rear axle nuts to check out the brake shoes on my '02 TXT and the left one was very tight, and when I was able to get it loose, The entire axle was turning, nut and all. "This cant be good" I thought. I am not much of a diff guy, is my differential messed up? I cant get the axle nut off to service the brakes.......

Engage hill brake. Remove castle nuts. Release hill brake to remove brake drums.

The brakes are disconnected. I used a pry bar on the wheel studs to hold the wheel still while I turned the axle nut with a big 15/16 closed end wrench.

Are the splines in the hub/brake drum stripped? If they are you will have to cut the castle nut off with a torch or die grinder. Another option is pull the differential cover and figure out a way to wedge the spider gears and hold the carrier while taking the nut off. There is a good chance you could break the carrier with this option. Be CAREFUL

No, the axle nut and the axle are frozen to each other. When I turn the axle nut with the hub stationary, the nut and the axle turn together. I cant remove the axle nut. I think my diff is screwed......

The splines on the axle or in the hub or both are stripped. Jack the cart up and turn the nut that won't come off and see if the other side axle turns. If you can't tell that way pull the differential cover and turn the carrier to see if your axle and nut turn.
Did you look at the Dana Manual Yurtle referenced

Most carts have "Open" differentials, so one wheel will spin with the other one blocked. Sounds like your differential is acting normally.

Also sounds like the Hub/Axle splines are stripped.
My guess is that you'll have to drop the pan on the differential and figure out a way to hold the other end of the axle from turning.

Perhaps someone more familiar with axles and differentials will be along and tell you how to hold the differential end of the axle without damaging it.

OOps, I just noticed Thatsme? already suggested this.

I had a similar problem, I got the castle nut off but could not remove the hub, can't say this is the recommended way but take a look.

If you have one side off you should see the splines on the hub and axle that drive the wheel. The castle nut just holds the hub on and stops the wiggle between the hub and axle. This nut is to be torqued to 70 to 140 ft/lbs.
tighten to 70 and then tighten just enough more to line up the cotter pin holes.

I don't have a picture of the outer. here are some pics of a total axle rebuild.
