Re: Differential problem
The reason removing the castle nuts works with the hill brake engaged is because both wheels (hubs) are locked from turning. If brakes are disconnected you have to find a way to lock both wheel hubs. You could maybe lock the opposite wheel hub with a pry bar the same as you are doing on the side you are trying to loosen. Keep in mind the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction of the one you are trying to loosen. Or get someone else as strong or stronger than you to hold a wrench on the opposite castle nut. This should break one or the other loose then use the pry bar trick on the other. What am I missing?
If the hubs are stripped this won't work. |

Re: Differential problem
Here is a drawing of ScottyB's that might help. If it is bad forum manners to use someone else's drawings let me know and I won't do it again.

Re: Differential problem
Yay! I mounted the whee; on the other side and held it and was able to get the axle nut off! And better news - the brake drum is the only part stripped. Andman it is really stripped! See photo. Hope you can see the entire thing was smooth. I'll order another from golfcartking right now! Thanks you guys!

Re: Differential problem
Kelly, I don't know if you want to go this route.....but, right now you could just replace that one hub.....OR if you want to make sure this won't happen again and make the hubs more Heavy Duty, go and replace them both with a pair of Ezgo Pinch Hubs, which you can get through ScottyB at cartsunlimited.net.
check them out...... http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Ezgo_Pinch_Hubs.html |

Re: Differential problem
I use a 4 ton porta-power ram to do this with. I made some angle iron ears to fasten onto the wheel lug bolts. I take 2 lengths of chain long enough to allow the ram to fit under the piece of 1/2" plate with the chains fastened onto. I screw the axle nut on backwards until it is flush. I install the ram and pump slowly some times tapping lightly on the outer edge of the drum with a soft hammer. Always works for me.

Re: Differential problem
That should work if you have more than 2 hands.
