Default 48V Conversion Complete – Another Satisfied Customer

I finished my 12V conversion today, I am very happy with the results. Very noticeable improvements in speed and torque. I slow down much less going up hills and overall top end increased. My reviews are very similar to what everyone has posted on the subject.

I purchased the necessary components from Scotty B, no surprise there on quality, speed of delivery, and top notch instructions.

Just a few comments that I did not find during my research on the subject. Due to the difference in how the 8v batteries go in the tray compared to 6v, I had to modify my battery hold down. I am not sure if this is the same for every hold down but just put it out there for other to know. I used my grinder with a metal cutting wheel to make the necessary modifications.
DPI charger (from Scotty) is very impressive. One aspect of this I am not accustom to is that unless you unplug it from the wall, it will stay on and make a humming noise. My old Power Wise was not like this. No big deal, but again just making other aware.

I did a little clean up on my low voltage wiring during the conversion. While cutting some old crimp ends off and making some pigtails to reduce the number of connectors competing for space on the batter terminals I noticed that the copper in the low voltage wires had discolored and turned black. This was the case on every low voltage wire.

A while back when I removed my Molex connection and wired everything directly I noticed the same thing but attributed to original wiring (2001). The low voltage wiring I worked on today is approximately 3-4 years old. Is this something to be concerned about?

I have attached a few pics of my 8v batteries in their new home. I have an email to Scotty for more of his 2 gauge cables – they are slick! I hope to install his reversing contactors before we go on vacation this August. Possible winter project is 2 speed EMP motor with Scotty’s reversing contactors as the switch from torque to speed. Jake’s long travel after that – yes, I have the bug!!!

It looks good, Joe! Too bad it is raining so hard and you can't really enjoy it for a few days.

On the black wiring issue, do you think it is corrosion? The best bet with crimp connectors is to use some dielectric grease on the wires/connection.

Thanks Matt - took it for a long road ride this morning before the rain. Regarding low voltage, not sure about corrosion. On some wires I cot off 6 inches and still discolored, must be corrosion but not sure what the down side will be or how long until I have issues.

What voltage does the DPI maintain on float charge?

Your battery hold down now looks very similar to the oem ezgo one for the new 48v txts.

Mine appears to be much higher, is this associated with new battery break in? This is my second full charge. Charge appear to be in float mode.

Looks like you are right on target for peak charge voltage for your US batteries. I don't think it was in float yet at 5 amps and 61.5v. I would expect the float charge to barely register any amps, but I may not have a clue on that one.
