Take the body off. Really, the body is in the way and hinders ease of removal. Spend an hour taking it off and save the extra three it will take to work around it. Trust me on this one. If the battery tray is rusty, the bolts are going to be a bear to remove. Cutting is great but you still have to put it all back together.

I will still consider removing the body.

I think the question I am not sure about is dealing with the tabs at the front.

The bolt goes through the front vertical support and through the tab and into the frame.

The aluminum battery trays do not have tabs.

Would you just bolt the vertical support directly back into the frame?

I have read here some said they cut the front off behind the tab. Not sure if they just leave the old tab behind or remove it when installing the aluminum tray.

I replaced mine with the aluminum and yes, just cut the tabs off. The new rack provides for plenty of bolting contact. The only additional suggestion I would make is to cover both the steel frame and the aluminum rack with a good heavy coat of paint. You are attaching dissimilar metals together. Aluminum and iron steel, (as opposed to carbon or stainless), are usually compatible, but a bit of extra precaution can't hurt.
