No reverse and warm S1 terminal at motor
I have power in forward but not reverse. The FNR is a new HD and the switches appear to be working and the reverse alarm is working. I get a click at the solenoid when I put in reverse and push the pedal but no go. I noticed the S1 terminal on the motor gets warm to hot if I keep the pedal engaged when the motor isn't turning. Are the two issues related? What else can I look for on the no reverse issue? Thanks.

Re: No reverse and warm S1 terminal at motor
Is this your 91 Marathon with a controller type series drive?
If so, there are two differences between forward and reverse. 1. The direction the amps flow through the stator windings (S1 -> S2 or S2 -> S1). The change in direction of the amp flow is accomplished by the high current contacts in the F/R switch assembly. 2. A switch on the F/R assembly places a fixed 5k resistor in parallel with the 0-5k potentiometer (throttle) to make it a 0-2.5K pot so the cart will only run at about half speed in reverse. Connect your DVM's negative test lead to the controller's B- terminal and the positive test lead to the M- terminal. Place the F/R selector in reverse and push the pedal just far enough to make the solenoid click. You should measure full battery pack voltage iif the F/R switch high current contacts are making good contact. ---------- To check out the throttle input to the controller while in reverse: Disconnect the black and white wires from the controller and measure between the disconnected wires with and Ohmmeter. In Forward, you should get about 0Ω with the pedal up and about 5000Ω with the pedal on the floor. In Reverse, you should get about 0Ω with the pedal up and about 2500Ω with the pedal on the floor. ----------- I'm not sure if S1 getting warm is related. |

Re: No reverse and warm S1 terminal at motor
Since You just replaced the FNR, make sure the wiring of the S1 and S2 is correct, they should both go to the "swivel" posts of the FNR.
If You accidentally reversed on of those 2 wires with either the A2 or M- posts, it will behave as You described. |

Re: No reverse and warm S1 terminal at motor
So after another review of my connections I realized I had reversed two of the connections going to the motor. After correcting that issue my reverse is now working. The pot box also tested with the specs.
I took the cart out for this inaugural run around the gravel roads on my riverfront property and everything worked well. Thanks for al the help from the forum! |
