Default 98 ezgo dcs rear end oil

I bought this cart it has a wine coming from rear. I checked the oil in the rear end and it doesn't look like its been changed since 98. I pulled pan cover off to clean. my questions is

1. is there something I can spray the gears off with to clean them.
2. what type and weight oil goes back in ive heard some say 30 others say 80-90 gear oil.

There is little or no difference in 30wt motor and 80-90 gear oil in a low speed rear end.

I figured 80/90 would have been to thick for a sling system. what can I use to clean gear? brake fluid?

Brake fluid, diesel fuel, spray lube, brake kleen. Prettyugh wat you have. If they look that bad, I think I might spray diesel fuel or spay lube on them to rinse. But I probably wouldn't do anything to them.

it thick like suryp and has more shavings then it should. I just wasn't sure if I sprayed brake fluid up in the housing over the gears if there were any seal are anything in there it would hurt

thanks for response

I would probably use diesel fuel. It's way cheaper. It will allow you to use more cheaper, it's still a light oil and will flow any junk out of the gears that it can grab. Transmission fluid is a good flush too. Those would be my first choices personally.

The viscosity of motor oils and gear oils are rated on different scales. See attached chart.

SAE 85W gear oil and SAE 30 motor oil have roughly the same viscosity, but have different additives for the different roles they are designed to perform.

Also, for the most part, the oil gets to the upper gears by being carried upwards by the lower gears and transferring rather than slinging.
(The ring gear moves too slowly to do much slinging.)

---------
Don't use brake cleaner.
There is a mixture of sealed open bearings used in the differential and the brake cleaner might get inside the sealed ones.
If it does, they will soon fail.

wouldn't brake cleaner be fine since it's used around rubber seals and bearings in its accepted application(Mabe I should read the precautions maybe it says to avoid seals?)? A serious question I would think it would be ok. But like I said I would personally use diesel fuel. It's my preference thing to rinse out or flush something and it's cheap compared to the others.

Not all sealed bearing use rubber seals and most brake cleaners attack various types of plastics. Also, bearing seals are designed to keep a relatively thick lubricant in rather than a thin solvent out.

I have no direct knowledge one way or the other, but I would use something less aggressive like diesel fuel or kerosene.

Yep I didn't think how it " melts" some plastics which prabably many new synthetic rubbers share plastics and some chemical compositions with those plastics.
