1996 ezgo down and out
Hey guys, 1st post on BGW. I've been following and trying to learn from all of you. Thanks for making mistakes and finding the fixes.
I recently purchased a 1996 TXT Series Cart and bought it for the looks to be honest. Body was perfect with lift and new 23 inch tires and back seat. From the onset, the wiring looked crappy and needed to be cleaned up.. The covers were off of the speed control and the F/R switch. The cart ran great for a while and had a top end of 20mph on GPS, but no torque. It ran hot coming from the wires around the F/R switch. I don't know anything about the cart other than it looks stock otherwise, wires included. I was told the batteries were new within the year. Last weekend, i noticed it got really hot and took it home. The next day, I went to check the wires and found that I now only have reverse and no forward. The solenoid clicks in reverse, but not in forward. I looked up a replacement solenoid and saw that the existing one is a 50amp WR 70-120224-5. I will be upgrading to 4 gauge, f/r switch, and obviously a HD solenoid very soon. Is it the solenoid? Where should I start? |

Re: 1996 ezgo down and out
Welcome to BGW, hi.
This is a common story, and I've good news and bad news for you. The good news is you have a great looking cart with the lift and wheels you want in place. The bad news is it needed to be upgraded to handle the extra electrical load the bigger tires put on the motor Good part about that is you get to decide how much you want to upgrade. A 1996 Ezgo is a Series cart. You need a bigger controller and bigger solenoid, a beefed up Forward and Reverse switch, and some bigger cables to run this extra juice through. |

Thanks Scott.
Do you think the solenoid is my problem? I will be ordering the wires, F/R switch and solenoid tomorrow. |

hiauthority-
If you have reverse, your problem can not be the solenoid as you would have nothing if it was the solenoid being bad. I can not give you any useful info other than that. |

You have micro switches on the F&R the put power to the controller through the throttle switch. If have reverse, the most likely the F&R micro switch is not engaging in forward. The second switch on the F&R only engages in reverse, could they be wired wrong?

Re: 1996 ezgo down and out
With your help I got it figured out. Blue and orange wires flipped and the F/R switch wasn't making good contact. I am looking to upgrade the other goods this week. Thanks Wizard, 72v and ScottyB.
