Default Heavy duty spring install questions on 97 CC/DS

So as the title says,

I am going to install HD springs in the rear of my 97 CC/DS the question is do I need longer U-bolts or will the stock one work? What about the rear shocks?

Spring pack is a 4 leaf design, I may take out one leaf to soften the ride a bit. Any suggestions on which one to remove? How about the last one, the over load spring?

I just installed the rear HD springs on my 2000 DS. I did not remove a leaf, but I did have to add a few washers to each shock to lengthen them. I added the washers above the bushings, between the bushing and the frame of the GC.

It may have worked without the washers, but it was awful tight. I did not want the suspension travel to be limited by the shocks....did not think that would make for very long shock life.

I think you need the longer U bolts with the four leaf. Easy enough for you to check with the tape. Measure your old spring pack and the new one and then see if there is enough thread below the nuts to cover the difference

Removing one spring will reduce the length of bolts needed.

No change if you use 3 springs. Buy 2" SHOCK EXTENDERS. They are fine thread, so the connectors you see in the hardware shop will not work. I buy them from NAPA. Autozone and Advance do not have them.

Cool thanks BOND what 3 springs do you recommend? 1st 3 with out the over load or is there a better combo that works?

They will work if you buy metric threaded ones.

Cool thanks guys for the info. I have started spraying down the threads, nuts/bolts, bushings on the spring eyes with penetrating oil, in hopes that by this weekend I will not have to CUSS too much!

Sawz-all (best friend on the tear down) for the shocks and also two bolts on the springs!! New bolts from ace for the springs since mine were awful.

Measured the shocks all the way open for a re-order before I cut.

Fun with the bolts on the front springs. WOW knuckle busters for sure.. They were bad..Good luck
