Indeed very unusual for batteries to last that long, sounds like they were well cared for...The keys to long battery life is keeping them charged as much as practical and never running them down too far as that is where damage occurs. Don't rely too much on the "battery gauge" as many will in fact lead you down the battery damaging road by allowing too much discharge. Get your voltage meter installed and never run your voltage down past 48.5 volts...
