EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
I have a 1980 EZ GO Gas. It was running fine then all of a sudden had NO POWER. I'm getting fuel in the air intake. There is a noise that sounds like it maybe coming from the engine. If I jack it up and push the pedal it will go. I have changed the carb, reeds, gaskets, brand new battery, solenoid and have done a full tune up on it. Please help! I just don't know where to go from here.

Since you already changed the reeds, let's take the exhaust off to see if it is plugged up.

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
The main clue is that there is fuel in the air intake. That means back pressure is making the fuel blow in the wrong direction.
I would have said issues with the reed valves not closing, but you already changed them. The 2 other clues, are no power, and runs when the wheels are off the ground. Wheels off the ground is what I would call a no load condition. Do you mix your gas 128:1? (one ounce of oil to one gallon of gas) |

Yes that is the mix I use. This problem started after filling with fuel. It was running perfect then this.
Should I disconnect the muffler completely and see if it runs? Do you have any suggestions on how to check it? |

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
Ok so I disconnected the muffler so it was running straight off the engine. I still have the same issue NO POWER. After the test ride the air in take was full of fuel. I have not changed the reeds but inspected them. They show no signs of cracks or wear and they look to be seated properly. Can they be weak and look fine to the eye? I do have a brand new set to put in. I have exhausted a lot of time and money and just don't know where to go from here. THANKS!!!

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
The engine is an air pump that pulls air in one side, and pushes it out the other side. The reed valves are what control the direction of flow.
Take the hose off of the air intake, and put your hand over the hole while turning it over. You should only feel suction, no blowing. I would say reeds, but am starting to think we should do a compression test to check for a broken ring. I'm going to assume that the piston was never removed. One more thought. did you disconnect at the muffler, or down at the engine? Just want to make sure that the pipe itself isn't clogged. |

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
I had a compression test done today. I had 122 psi therefor I believe its not a broken ring. I disconnected it at the motor not the muffler. I do get suction in the carb. What I did notice if I slightly pinch the fuel line coming from the pump to the carb the cart runs as normal. After I release it the carb overloads with fuel as if the pump is overloading the carb with fuel. Just wandering your thoughts on this. Thanks for your help!

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
Maybe take the fuel pump apart for a good cleaning, and check the diaphragms.
Usually a ripped diaphragm will suck fuel into the engine through the pulse line. I guess it could also over pressure the pump. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...fuel-pump.html I'm hoping this is the issue because I'm at a loss after this. |

Re: EZ 1980 Gas Trouble Shooting HELP!!
I removed the pump and clean he pump. The diaphragms were not ripped however they did look very stretched. I wasn't able to order just the diaphragms so I had to order a whole new fuel pump from Vintage Golf Carts. I will let you know on Monday how it turns out. Im with you after this im LOST everything except the motor is new now lol
I appreciate your time and help! |
