Do you own what year yours is? I have an old G9 (1989) and have become a self-learned expert on that thing now. I had a similar kinds issue a few years back when I first got the G9 and may be able to help you with some more specifics. Just from what you describe, maybe your solenoid is bad. But with these older Yamahas, these are prone to electrical gremlins due to corrosion, bad ground circuits, etc.

Let's start with some basics? Are you familiar with how to use a multi-meter (volt meter)?

We really need to know what year and model you have as the circuitry between models and years will radically affect advice given. See if you can find a serial number on that then do some googling. Their are a ton of sites out there that will help you identify what you have. There is a sticky on top of the Yamaha forum that you may find helpful as well.

JN6-2xxxxx would be a '97 G16. I think that's what you've got.

With the melted wires, I'd be looking for a 12v wire shorting out to the frame.
