Re: Would bad crank seals affect reeds?
Usually fuel in the air cleaner is from bad or broken Reeds pull the carb off and make sure you there isn't a broke or bent one

Re: Would bad crank seals affect reeds?
To update- I replaced both crank seals. The cart runs good now. Compression is a little over 105. I have new reeds but haven't installed them yet.

Re: Would bad crank seals affect reeds?
Awesome. That compression is still low. You'll probably have to do the top end in the not too distant future but worry about that then!

Re: Would bad crank seals affect reeds?
2 stroke: when the piston goes up it sucks air into the crankcase under the piston. If you have leaky seals it sucks a little air in the seals and less air/fuel from the carb. The piston comes down and compresses that air/fuel (some, not like the compression above the piston, because the crank case is far larger than the tiny cylinder head chamber), and some leaks out the seals causing the oil you see since the oil tends to coat everything in there. That compression shoots the air/fuel up the transfer ports to above the piston. Then piston goes up and compresses that air. If you lost some out the seals in the bottom end, you get less in the top end. The seals usually don't leak that much, but it does not take much to make it not run as you can see. It is just like an intake leak on a 4 cycle, just one little hole messes it all up.
Reeds are just a one way valve. They keep the air/fuel in the crankcase from coming back out the carb at low speeds. At high speeds the air flows in fast and resists reversion. |
