Default Yamaha G1....bad starter/generator???

So I have a 1982 G1 and I've been trying to figure out this slow starting problem for about 6 months now. The starter turns over and starts the cart with no problem when the battery is charged at a full 12.8v right off the charger, but if the voltage sinks to 12.4v - 12.5v it will turn over REALLY slow. The battery is new but after sitting for a day or two will read 12.56v and doesn't want to turn the starter over. According to the auto parts store the battery is fine. I have replaced the brushes and cleaned the commutator. Solenoids click when pedal is pressed and it will turn over but not fast enough to start it. The voltage reads around 11.3v - 11.6v when cranking under load. Any ideas?....

Yeah, as rugged as those starters are they don't last forever. 11.5 or so volts should be plenty enough to start that thing. Combine that with 12+ starting the cart ok tells me there is nothing wrong with your starting circuit anywhere. I would lean toward a new starter, particularly since you already serviced yours with no improvement.

The one thing I didn't do was clean up the armature when i had it apart. The Youtube video I watched on changing brushes didn't show anything about the armature needing cleaned so I'm wondering if that can be part of the problem as well. The odd thing here is that after the cart has been running for awhile and the battery charges the problem goes away. Its just at that 12.5v or below the the problem starts back up again. Going to re-check all connections tonight to make sure it's not just a loose wire, but I'm fairly certain a loose wire is not my issue.

Well Lochlin it looks like you were correct. A few of the vanes of the commutator were getting readings of 350+ ohms. There must be a short in the winding. Here is a good link if anyone needs to check the starter/generator for a short... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXV4p3m9TwY
