Default Upgrade g2 brakes without discs

Hi, I have a g2 that I can't sink hundreds of dollars into but want to improve the brakes. Are there any upgrades still using drums such as Umax parts or better shoe materials or slotted drums? Mine occasionally get pretty hot going down a long hill.

New OEM shoes and drums will make it stop like new.

And cables that work freely along with proper adjustment as well.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for not getting back sooner, had some technical issues.

The shoes have barely any wear but have been on there for years, adjustment & movement is good so I will change shoes & drums for standard new ones.

Thank you for your input.

If the problem is downhill braking adopt a proper method for using the brakes in that situation. Apply the brakes when you reach your comfort speed and keep applying until you are 5 mph or more under that speed. Release the brakes and reapply when you reach that upper speed again. Repeat until you are on flat ground. That provides a cooling cycle and keeps the brakes within a reasonable working range.

Most people apply the brakes when they are well over their comfort speed and slow down to the comfort speed. That over works the brakes and results in poor performance or even failures. That's what those sand traps are for in downhill curves on highways in mountainous areas.

A problem you need to consider -- weight transfer - your going down a steep hill and when you step on the brake pedal the brakes lock up -- the weight is being put over on the front end. 4 wheel braking === 70% from the front and 30% from the rear.

I'm using this a lot to get around a resort, the elevation change from top to the lake is about 650' so I am riding the brakes quite a lot whatever speed I go (faster is always better). Don't have an issue locking up, I'm not jumping on them. Biggest issue is overheating if I have to go all the way from top to bottom in one trip, the drums feel like they are warped slightly.

Riding the brakes is just what I was describing. The greater the speed the worse the result. Either slow down and cycle the brakes or take Shepard's advice and add front brakes.

Sounds like your drums may need replacing now. Changing rear brakes to disks alone is probably not the solution in this instance.
