Unhappy G1 1985 yamaha gas golf cart

Hi to all
I have my uncles old cart and I want to trick it out and fix it for my kids. I'm trying to get my son into fixing cars and thought this would be a good starter project for us both. but he keeps saying "mom are you sure you know what your doing" YES!!!! well maybe so heres the issues it kinda runs and has good compression but here is the list of things wrong/missing/not sure
1) lots of smoke and won't go up hills
2) missing the oil tank so was told to mix gas and oil
3) choke has to be on to run

i have ordered: new carb and tune up kit
any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated
thanks from a mom of boy who like the tv too much !!!!!

Generally when choke is needed to run the crank seals are bad

start with the basic tune up. Air filter, spark plug carb cleaning. What ratio are you mixing the fuel? If the choke has to stay out it more than likely needs crank seals. Check the sticky's at the top of the page.

Heres a link to a service manual.

Probably crank seals but you might as well get a new fuel pump first and check all of your gas / vacuum lines for cracks / leaks while you are at it.

Leave it on, just disconnected, and keep mixing. Those auto oilers were prone to fail.

If you do crank seals you will need a clutch puller and and have to remove the clutch and the oil pump gear housing so I would remove the big plastic gear and the pump if you have it off it looks cleaner and I'd hate to see the plastic gear and potentially wreck a seal it's not a big deal but if you are in there it's worth removing
