Default G1 needs a top end, have a question on parts

So, this is actually a buddys cart, that he got from a mutual buddy when he upgraded.

It was ran for a handful of years with the factory oiler, which is in working condition, and a 50/50 mix of non-ethanol and race gas.

Since golf season is finally here, it was time to bust it out, and low and behold, it broke. Was running along, made some noise (the bad kind) and that's it. Dead.

We pulled the engine after some troubleshooting, and found that the piston had broken skirts, which ended up in the bottom end, and fragged the bearings.

So, here we are, looking for at minimum, crank bearings and seals and a piston.

The head and cylinder are in what appears to be good shape still, so:

Is an overbore kit a good way to go, or keep the stock 215cc?

Are eBay top end kits any good, if not where do we go?

He might BBQ the muff, since it's apart, and do some general detailing.

Aside from those things, what else should we do while it's apart?

Thanks in advance, guys!

If the cylinder is good and doesn't have any signs of scoring or bad stuff, I'd get bearings, a set of rings and a quick hone on the cylinder and call it a day. Should be fine after that. Just make sure you get all the crap cleaned out of the case

I was kind of on the fence about the cylinder, since it needs a piston as well I wondered if it was worthwhile to go oversized or not.

But, yeah, its surprisingly clean considering the bottom of the piston is all shrapneled out.

Bore bore bore.. quality control on the Chinese top end rebuild kits are bad....since you have it apart there should be a stamp on the top of the Piston of it's size unless it's maxed out you should be able to get next size bigger Piston and take it into machine shop (with new Piston) and they will bore it out to spec...while it's apart delete the oil injection it's not a matter of if but when it's going to fail no more fuel than these things burn it's not a Hassel to premix also while it's apart delete the butterfly in the exhaust manifold

Butterfly in the muffler is new to me. Any chance of a pic so I know what I'm looking at?

For some reason, I can't search on this board. It comes up as "no matches found" or something along those lines.

But having a machine shop do the cylinder sounds like a good idea.

10 and 13 are the main parts it was supposedly there to reduce noise at low throttle but it's pointless only thing is once it is removed you will need to plug the hole where the shaft goes through I always just weld the hole shut

Ah, you know, I saw that and wondered why it would be there. But that's as far as I got.

I'll take a closer look.

I actually don't know. And my buddy took it back home while he sources parts. I have the engine here, that I'm sure is original.

Is there a date code on it that will tell us an approximate build date?

yes you'll see some stamping on the engine right side rear kinda where the carb mounts. It will start out with a J where the shroud bolds up
