On the Suzuki sled engine there are 2 yellow wires coming our of the alternator which attach to the 2 outer terminals of the kohler unit and then just wire from the center terminal to the battery. Lastly the kohler unit itself must be grounded. On page #5 of my sled build there is a pic of the installed kohler unit. As you can see , very simple once Shepard told me how to wire it.

Everything small engine usually has an alternator, and they use a diode for low power 4A and less to charge the battery. That lets the positive power go through and holds back the negative wave, like a one way valve. With more charge it will overcharge and can be inefficient, so they use a rectifier that can use both sides of the wave. They also use a voltage regulator so it can shut off charging when its not needed and will trash your battery. Anything 6A and more normally has VR on it, especially a constantly running engine.

But an ignition coil normally only makes a wave at ignition time, while an alternator makes as many as it has poles. That is the adjustment on outboard tachs they have many poles to make more power per revolution. As the alternator is right on the crank. Many 4 stroke will fire on the off stroke because it don't matter if it does while a 2 stroke uses that fire.

If you have an old DC meter with a needle, you can put it on there and turn it by hand and see it go positive and negative. Can with a digital too but harder to read. If the rectifier pukes you can see AC voltage at the battery when running because it has shorted out, its a giveaway that the diode or rectifier is gone.

Right, a light bulb does not care if its AC or DC. If you have no electric start and battery to charge, it can be AC to run a bulb. CDI/etc type ignitions can be AC or DC powered depending.
