Size is important
I am rebuilding an EZGO 295cc engine. When dissassebling the engine I lost the woodruff key for the crankshaft to fan hub. Thought, no big deal, I'll just go to the hardware store to get one.
The EZGO part number is 26692G01. It is metric and the clossest I can come to it is a 3mm X 5mm woodruff key (too small, hence size is important). Anybody know what size these are supposed to be? I'm guessing it is 3mm X 7.5mm. Anyone know? |

Re: Size is important
I'm not sure on the size of the key but I do know you can do without it,I know a local Ezgo engine rebuilder that leaves the key out in order to advance the timing a few degrees,it won't move after you torque down.

Re: Size is important
Hmmmm! You know, I have not found anyone that knows including the local golf cart shop. They can get the key and I did order one. Rather than drive 100 miles finding someone with metric woodruff keys I decided to just order it and wait. Probably get it next week. Needed other stuff anyway and it was an excuse to get it.
I'd be afraid I'd put this back together and it would then slip. It's not like it is easy to get to in order to reset it. Now I'll wonder if that would have done the trick and saved the wait. Thanks for the suggestion. |

Re: Size is important
It'll work, I've had mine this way for a year and no problems at all.

Besides, I can then give my opinion when someone else asks this quesiton. Thank you everyone for your input. What a great forum huh? Rory |

Re: Size is important
On our go kart racing engines we don't use the keys. We lap the flywheel to crankshaft with valve lapping compound ,then clean it real goodcrank and wheel and assemble , never had one slip turn well over 7000 rpm

Re: Size is important
No, just assembled with the grooves lined up. I'm not into racing them or getting them to outperform norms, just like it to work right. Perhaps I'm just getting old...zzzzzzzz

Re: Size is important
Thought I'd give you an update. Still running with no problem. I'd probably put the key in if/when I rebuild another but it works without it!
