lost power with new exhaust
I have a 1985 ezgo 2-stroke with robin engine. I replaced the exhaust with one smaller then the one that was on it. It still runs ok. Back fires once in awhile. The problem is lost power. It moves fine on a paved road or downhill. But is slow on grass that is on an incline. And barely makes it up a steep hill.
I have attached a picture of the exhaust and also the carburetor which might need adjusting. |

Re: lost power with new exhaust
Welcome to BGW Problem with the back firing is a simple fix you have no spring on the back side of the throttle cable. Wait just a bit and BREW CITY has the answer and the instructions to over come this problem. The muffler deal is probably to much restriction the 2 cycle engines are really crazy when it comes to inlet and exhaust and dirt bike and snowmobile riders even tune the engine with exhaust pipe length.

Re: lost power with new exhaust
Replace it with a larger proper sized exhaust. This is critical for a 2 stroke!

Re: lost power with new exhaust
...looks like the oem downpipe but the silencer/muffler is smaller than OEM...which in turn may not be enough restriction for proper backpressurewaves/scavanging on a two-stroke (particularly needed for bottom-end power). Is it a removable packing type silencer/muffler from say the bottom? I ask that for two reasons: 1-you can compare the baffle systems, 2-you might could modify the insides to create more restriction. Where did you buy that/what did they say?
Also, turn your key off and step on the throttle to the floor and make sure your butterfly valve on the carb is opening all the way...after you fix the spring of course... :) |

Re: lost power with new exhaust
Wouldn't a smaller exhaust cause more restriction?
How would you modify the exhaust? |

Re: lost power with new exhaust
No. Typically, a 'smaller' or shorter 2-stroke muffler has less restriction. Think 'glasspack' muscle car muffler's or 2 stroke moto-x silencer's. Did you make that thing?

Re: lost power with new exhaust
2 strokes run a "Tuned" exhaust. It is designed to resonate and reduce restriction at the top end RPM. Smaller / Shorter isn't the answer. Correct length is the answer.

Re: lost power with new exhaust
This exhaust is off a 2-stoke, 50cc ATV.
Is there any way to create more restriction? Don't want to spend $200 on a new exhaust on an old cart like this one. |

Re: lost power with new exhaust
It is not about restriction but about tuning (chamber volume)
