it doesn't real start. The starter turns everything and nothing ever fires off.

We have checked again and couldn't feel any airflow. Feed a little fumes right into the carb it sorta fired once but didn't hold. Thinking it is either the base gasket or the head. it is acting like it is firing but the pressure just isn't being held. Thinking about maybe putting a new engine in it. kinda wanted to do it last year but it's not my cart. Any suggestions as to what is an easy engine swap. It's an 82 marathon with a Robins 244 engine 2pg.

Nothing is really an easy swap into these style carts because the motor turns both directions. To swap motors you're also going to have to swap rear axles to one that has reverse.

Here's a little trick to find an air leak.

Use a length of small diameter hose. Hold one end to your ear, and move the other end around the suspected leak areas while cranking the motor. You will know immediately when you find it, or are even close to it.

take the spark plug out and blow air into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. make sure and to put a rag around the blow gun to make a good seal. this way you can hear exactly where the air is coming from without all the extra noise from the engine turning over.

Great advice. Sometimes I miss the obvious.

No, the engine actually runs in reverse.

What he said!

That's the unique thing about these Robin Engines, they run in one direction for forward, and the F/R switch just changes the direction of the S/G and spins the motor the other way for reverse. That results in the rear axle not having a reverse gear, and making a swap to an axle that has reverse a necessity when swapping motors

i am clearly missing something. I have done all the things you have suggested and have not been able to locate an air leak. I don't believe much maintenance was done on it before we got it. So with out being able to locate a leak and with low compression I am wondering what the next best step would be. I have read a lot on here about crank seals going I don't know if that is the issue. Any lead in a direction would be good. if it needs new seals I might as well rebuild the top. some one said on here that it probably didn't need that because of the suddenness of the stoppage but it won't hurt will it?
