Default 89 ezgo 4x4 acceleration

When I get on the cart a push the pedal it will spin the tires and about break your neck. Does it have a potentiometer? I know how to adjust a potentiometer but I'm think this cart doesn't have one. Just got it today and would like to get it not snapping necks. Thanks
