Using 3 batteries instead of 6
Have read where people have used 3 12v batteries instead of the 6-6v on a 36v cart.
I understand amp/hr loss and need for deep cycle, but curious how the wiring could be accomplished as mine (for instance) has 4 wires-two for each side (or front and back group). How can you get 18v?.... |

He has a electric HD. They took a different approach to early speed control. Using a series of solenoids they ran the motor on 16v, 24v, and 36v for 3 speeds.
I don't think you can do this with 3/12s |

Thanks Scottyb, didn't know these old ones were different. Now I understand.

Re: Using 3 batteries instead of 6
On my '68 DE the four speeds are 18v resisted, full 18v, 36v resisted, then full 36v for full speed. You cannot maintain the third speed (36v resisted), as there is a glass electrical delay tube (like in old TVs) that makes it full 36v in about three seconds. Kind of hard to explain, but I hope that makes sense.

Re: Using 3 batteries instead of 6
Just curious. Could he make it 12,24, then 36v? I just got a 1976 Harley 4 wheel cart. (Thanks to crashtestdummy's sticky) I found out the year etc. Have not had time to tear into it yet but, according to what little I have found out it runs on 12, 24, and 36v. I'm assuming this because it has three 12 volt solenoids.

Re: Using 3 batteries instead of 6
I would have to see the original cart wiring, or a schematic, but it is unlikely they ran the cart on 16,24,36 volts by disconnecting battery wiring to reduce voltages and give it 3 speeds. Possibly, 12,24,36. If that is correct, it would be a simple process to re-wire it to use 1,2,3 batteries instead of 2,4,6 batteries for the 3 voltage combinations. The real issue would be the problem with amp draw. If you ran the cart a lot at low speeds, you would wipe out that battery in very little time, causing all electric components to wear quickly, and possibly catastrophic failures of major components with even light use.

Re: Using 3 batteries instead of 6
I found a wiring diagram, not a schematic for 76-78 de-40 Harley Davidson. It appears in that cart that voltage is controlled by and accelerator hitting different taps on a coiled resistor to control the speeds. If that is correct, the unit could easily be run on 3-12 volt batteries and not 6-6 volts. It could be also run on 6-12 volts, with parallel sets of 3-12 volt batteries. Any combination of batteries that can be wired up to close to 36 will work fine. The only issue will be the amp hour capacity with using less than the 6 batteries.
